WHIRLAWAY

Build Number:

After years of bluewater sailing, the owners made the transition from sail to power—but without sacrificing performance, independence, or classic New England styling. They selected an Alden 50 with a Ray Hunt-designed hull and entrusted JBY with an ambitious transformation. The centerpiece of the project was replacing the original engines with units approximately 40% larger. This increased Whirlaway’s cruising speed from 12–14 knots to an effortless 20–24 knots.

Services Utilized by Department:

Carpentry Projects:

The salon and galley were redesigned with extensive custom cabinetry, while the forward cabins were modified to provide additional storage. Berths were enlarged and upgraded to accommodate the owners’ growing family. New teak decking, side windows, and a headliner were installed, complemented by integrated interior lighting.

Rigging Projects:

New wiring, lighting, and rigging for the tender crane.

Paint & Glass Projects:

Structural modifications were completed to accommodate the new engines, including changes to the engine beds and associated fiberglass structures. A custom carbon-fiber hardtop was fabricated and installed, dinghy stowage was reconfigured, and the mast layout was modified. Awlgrip was applied to the mast and other affected surfaces.

Mechanical Projects:

Original engines were replaced with larger Cummins diesels, requiring modifications to the engine beds and shaft logs, along with upgraded running gear and propellers. Exhaust and ventilation systems were redesigned, and new soundproofing was installed. Additional upgrades included new bow and stern thrusters, a windlass, a watermaker, and a refrigeration system, complemented by routine mechanical maintenance. Entirely new AC and DC electrical systems were installed, along with new inverter and charging systems, solar power, and energy monitoring. Solar arrays were integrated into the new hardtop, and new lighting and electronics were installed throughout the yacht.
