After years of bluewater sailing aboard a Bristol 47, the owners of Whirlaway were ready to make the transition from sail to power—but without sacrificing performance, independence, or classic New England styling.
They selected an Alden 50 with a Ray Hunt-designed hull and entrusted JBY with an ambitious transformation. The centerpiece of the project was replacing the original engines with units approximately 40% larger. This increased Whirlaway’s cruising speed from 12–14 knots to an effortless 20–24 knots.
Completed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project required extensive coordination among JBY’s departments, suppliers, and specialty subcontractors.
This extensive transformation was completed with support from a trusted group of suppliers and subcontractors, including Ray Hunt Design, Cummins, Ocean Planet Energy, Victron Energy, Moore Brothers Composites, Accutech Propellers, Soundown, Teak Decking Systems, Cay Electronics, Hinckley Cushions, Kinder Industries, New England Boatworks, Pompanette, Imtra Marine Lighting, Sleipner, Maxwell, Spectra Watermakers, Sea Frost Refrigeration, and others.
